They're fun to play and work well enough as a vehicle for setting up fantasy battles, but even in the campaigns I can't tell what they are about. I can't really decide which I prefer.)īut where I think Planetfall really outshines Age of Wonders III is in the richness of its setting and the fun and variety of its unit and faction design.Īge of Wonders III, much as I love it, is a MUCH more generic fantasy design. (Age of Wonders III is more about mythical monsters clashing and forming lines and preventing the enemy from outflanking or surrounding your troops, Planetfall is more about setting up your lines of fire and paths of attack and cover and disrupting enemy defenses. Planetfall has a more sophisticated economy (which I honestly don't really care much about) and combat that is at least as good as AoWIII, though both are great in their own right. (Though I expect more Planetfall DLC may change that balance.) Planetfall has its strengths and weaknesses, but as of the last patch I do prefer it to Age of Wonders III.Īge of Wonders III has magic and more interesting heroes thanks to the class system, and has a more varied world to explore. I think we'll manage to survive the wait. The Shadow Realm community expansion mod is in beta, there is the PBEM mod for balance, the Empire Building mod for a different economy, the Chivalrous Intentions mod for hundreds of new units, the Decodence mods for new map environments and structures. In the meantime: there are a lot of very nice mods for this game. I doubt we'll have to wait THAT long for AoW4, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was another couple of years. Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic was released in 2003. If I were a betting man I'd give you better than even odds that AoW4 is next on the agenda after Planetfall is completely done, but that is pure speculation on my part.Įither way, it might take a while. But I would be VERY surprised if they did not make an AoW4 at some point. Perhaps they will make even more Planetfall stuff. Between those and the patches for that game, I expect that will fully occupy Triumph for 2020.

There are two more expansions coming for Planetfall this year.

We might see the odd bug-fix in the future. They added a lot of patches, a few expansions and then decided this game was done. Triumph does not, as far as I can tell, believe in the concept of endless DLC. Development on AoW3 is finished and has been finished for a long time.
